These artists take on identity issues (and Asian identity in particular) by creating narratives that often are born from loosely autobiographical, conflicting situations. In video, film, multimedia works, photographs, and performance art, they conjure temporary identities that reflect the constant struggle, negotiation, and precarious balance between different worlds. Hung Liu is one of the most beloved artists represented in SJMA’s collection. Liu is known primarily for her paintings, which are drawn from Chinese historical photography. She has recently been working on a three-screen video installation based on digital snapshots that she takes with her iPhone. LYF Camp is a 5 day 4 night summer youth leadership camp held every June in the San Francisco Bay Area for Taiwanese American youth in grades 4 through 12. Although we largely serve Taiwanese American youth, we encourage anyone of any ethnic origin interested in Taiwanese American culture, values, and leadership to register and attend. You’ve seen San Jose Taiko play – now it’s your turn! Join fellow taiko enthusiasts in learning the basics of SJT’s style in a fun and engaging three-hour workshop. A brief history of taiko is presented, and participants learn a song based on fundamental stance, rhythms, and technique. No taiko experience is necessary, but participants must be at least 15 years old and capable of fairly rigorous physical activity.
